There’s a couple oddball angles I found or considered while researching for the articles, and I’m just going to throw them here. Call them fuel for shower thoughts.

Free College and Student-Debt Forgiveness:
  • A main argument against paying college athletes is that they already get paid for scholarships. If college is free at state schools, do athlete scholarships mean anything? In that case, would athlete-pay advocates see a surge of support for their cause?
  • Colleges have come up with all sorts of creative ways to generate more revenue as state funding declines. One of those ways is to bring in more students from overseas, who often pay high fees and full tuition. The problem is, the Trump administration is cracking down on student visas. Professor Solow pointed me toward this article about how the University of Illinois took unusual measures to protect their now-vital revenue source—they bought an insurance policy to protect against a decline in Chinese enrollments.
  • Loans aren’t the only way college students can raise the capital needed to pay for college. They also can sell stock in themselves… huh?!
